Background: Ash grew up in the podunk town of Elk Grove, Michigan. During spring break of 1982, a teenaged Ash drove out to a little cabin in the woods with his friend Scotty, Scotty's girlfriend Shelly, his own girlfriend Linda, and his sister Cheryl. There, they found a strange book and an abandoned reel-to-reel tape recorder belonging to the cabin's owner, Professor Raymond Knowby. Knowby studied the occult, and the tape was his translation of the book: Necronomicon Ex Mortis, the Book of the Dead. Bound in human flesh and inked in human blood, the book had the power to unleash Kandarian demons from the Other Realm, which possessed Ash's friends and family, turning them into zombie-like creatures called Deadites. Only by sheer luck and force of will did Ash manage to put his friends' souls to rest ... but he was forced to massacre every single one of them, because the only way to ensure the demon was freed from the body was through dismemberment. (Canon: Evil Dead).

One of the demons attempted to possess Ash by getting into his hand through a stab wound, but he took the chainsaw he used for the dismemberments, and cut his hand off at the wrist. The fun didn't stop there: Knowby's daughter, Annie, returned from her own expedition for the missing pages of the Necronomicon to find her father's cabin the site of a massacre. One of the pages she brought had an illustration of a chainsaw-handed man - Ash, preordained as the Chosen Hero who would vanquish the Deadites. Her boyfriend & two backwoods folks who had guided her back to the cabin also fell victim to the Kandarian demons, and Ash and Annie made one last stand against them with the now-completed book ... only to have Ash dragged into the portal between realities along with the Kandarian demons. (Canon: Evil Dead II)

The portal brought Ash to the Middle Ages, where he was forced - once again - to fight the forces of evil so that he could be sent back to his own time. When he returned, he took up his old job as a housewares clerk at ValueStop, a chain of department stores. (Canon: Army of Darkness)

Elk Grove cast him out as a mass murderer, labeling him "Ashy Slashy", and he began a thirty-year trek through Michigan to bury his past. He worked in several different ValueStops along the way, drowning his angst in liquor and drugs, denying the arrival of old age with a lot of cheap hair dye, dentures, and a girdle for his beer gut. But one fateful night, while stoned off his ass and trying to impress a cute hooker who "liked poetry", he read from the Book of the Dead, and awoke the Kandarian demons once more. His co-workers, Pablo and Kelly, refused to let him just run away from his responsibilities, and joined him in a quest to end things once and for all by disposing of the Necronomicon. Along the way, they met Ruby, a centuries-old immortal who originally wrote the book, and wanted to use it to become the mistress of all evil (in Ash's words, "the Deadite Godfather"). Instead, Ash cut her a deal: she could have her demonic children, as long as she let Pablo and Kelly live. (Canon: Ash Vs. Evil Dead, Season 1)

Months later, the Deadites attack Ash, Pablo, and Kelly while they're living in Ash's dream town: Jacksonville, Florida. One of the demons taunts Ash by calling him "Ashy Slashy", and he knows where they have to go to face Ruby: back to Elk Grove. Once they find her, Ruby tells the three heroes that her "children" have turned against her, and are trying to resurrect their father, the shape-shifting demon Baal. They join forces to stop Baal, but Ash loses his father and his childhood friend Chet to the Deadites in the process, and almost loses Pablo. He travels back in time to 1982 to try and right some of his wrongs by making sure that his younger self never plays Knowby's tape and reads from the book, but ends up having to confront Baal a second time in the past. After a mano-a-demon fight of epic proportions, things seem to be put to rights, and those still left standing are free to return to the present ... (Canon: Ash Vs. Evil Dead, Season 2)

He spent four months on the floating island of Verens, pulled there through a random portal by unseen and unknown forces which needed his emotions to survive and help rebuild their ruined world. He made a few fast friendships - notably Deadpool, Yang, Neptune, and Dazai - and landed himself a job as a bouncer at a bar & inn called The Gold Pan, run by Scrooge McDuck. He was actually the best boss Ash had ever had, talking duck-ness aside. Most importantly, though, Ash found people he could open up to about his past who understood: not just his BFF Deadpool, but Jill Valentine, a tough gal with a soft heart. The two of them were very, very slowly dancing around the edges of a relationship when another portal opened up, and dropped them in the middle of Terminal Island. Personality: Ash is all ego and bluster and hot air. He's crass, crude, loud, and proud of it. He'll hit on any girl with a nice rack, is a sucker for "radar eyes", and will do just about anything to pretend he's still in his 20s and ready to party. Running away from his destiny has made him run away from practically any other responsibilities he has, as well: at ValueStop he was a slacker and a clumsy oaf. His tendency to break things and charm others into cleaning up after him are his chief modus operandi. He's not above a dine-and-dash, or trying to charm his way out of any consequence under the sun. But when the shit hits the fan, Ash is the first to take action to protect those he considers his friends. He'll say it's not because he actually cares, though: who'd pay for pancakes? This is a blatant LIE. Ash has learned that being around him means a high mortality rate, and if people stay alive long enough for him to get to know them and consider them friends, he'd like to keep them that way. He's so stubborn in this belief that he's been known to disappear on people and tackle giant obstacles alone, thinking it's "safer" that way. After all the friends and family he's lost to the Deadites, he takes the few he can manage to make very seriously - internally. His bravado covers up his fear of loss, more than anything else.

One last point about being the Chosen One: Ash resists his duties as long as he can to stave off that loss and ruin, to the point of having let it turn him from a kind, idealistic soul into a lazy, irresponsible, coward. For all his resistance, after 30 years of running and failing, Ash feels, deep down, in a place he's afraid to admit, that being Chosen is the only good and special thing about him. He relishes the chance to show off: under the ego and swagger, he truly feels like this supernatural ability to kick demon ass is his only good and redeeming quality. In truth, though, that kindness and idealism still exists... he's just buried it very deep and covered in in layers of asshole lacquer to keep it from being destroyed entirely. It saved him more than once, and he's not about to let evil chip away the last of it from him. In a way, he's trying to protect himself just as much as he's trying to protect others.

For some people, Ash is NOT going to be easy to get along with. He's built up his crass, brash, insulting persona to keep people at arm's length and safe from the spawn of the Necronomicon. He'll call folks derogatory nicknames, make racist or sexist remarks, generally break any taboo he can without really batting an eye or caring... just to come across as an untouchable tough guy. I know he's going to have a ton of negative CR, but that's part of the fun. On the rare occasion where he's allowed to relax, though, he'll do anything to impress his new friends.

Abilities: He's got the chemical tolerance of Keith Richards, and being the "Chosen One/Jefe" means he's got almost supernatural skill with a shotgun and the chainsaw arm he built for himself during Evil Dead 2. He's also a damn good brawler, even without his weapons, and has a mechanical hand Pablo created for him that's strong enough to crush metal. On the flipside, he's dumb as a post, and all the drinks and drugs haven't done his intellect any favors either. He's been patching up his Oldsmobile Delta 88 for over 30 years, so he's got some skill as a mechanic, as well.
